Bali & the Spirit is a small company that offers handmade treasures originating exclusively from Bali.
Bali – in this lush green paradise that has been called “The Morning of the World”, that the Balinese themselves call “The Island of the Gods”, it seems there is nothing that cannot become a canvas for an artist’s imagination.
Because in Bali artistic ability is not regarded as a rare talent. Children learn their skills sitting at their parents’ knee, absorbing the techniques while watching painters as they paint, listening to musicians as they play. Artistic expression becomes part of life.

Craftsmanship Meets Artistry
Artisans has produced for B&tS ready-to-wear pieces requiring hours upon hours of expertise and artistry. It is fascination way finesse dexterity of the artisans to create and imagine garments made to be crafted, in diametric opposition to industrialized, mass-produced fast fashion, instead of distilling millennia of traditional dyeing and printing processes – such as bandhani and batik – embroidery techniques, and weaving know-how. In the truest of tradition and with patience, tender care and devotion, the women and men with whom the designer has built relationships of trust and respect give life to the unique pieces that corral to form B&tS’s distinctive collections.
Traditional Balinese Textiles
Throughout the world, the wealth of traditional Balinese textiles is well known. While admired by many for their beauty and artistry, textiles play an important part in the daily life and ceremonies of the Balinese. Most attire consists of a simple rectangular piece of cloth, which is stylishly wrapped around the body.
Textiles are used as offerings, ceremonial dress, decoration, and as customary gifts. Textiles in Bali are also powerful symbols, indicating the status and well being of the wearer. It is believed that some textiles are permeated with magical powers, which can protect the wearer against malicious people wishing harm.
Old Balinese generation men and women wear a cloth, called a kamben, usually batik, wrapped around the waist. Men wrap the cloth around their waist with a fold in the front, whereas women wear it tightly around their hips with no drapes. Women tie the kamben at the waist on the left-hand side, whereas men tie it in the center.
Some of the techniques what we use:
We silkscreen our fabrics as far away from industrial presses as possible – in Balinese workshops, for instance, using wooden frames and hand-sculpted stamps in the purest of block printing traditions. Each stamp is a work of art in its own right. Patterns are sketched and carved by hand in a workshop using simple metal tools, hammers, and chisels. They are then soaked in oil and flattened under a weight for two weeks. The millennial technique is one of patience and minutia. Men stamp the fabric as many times are there are colours. They hit with the side of the hand, always in the exact same spot, with no colour bleeding, lining up the patterns perfectly.
This lacework, known in English as cutwork, is called krawang in Balinese. Uluwatu krawang is made in the traditional way. Lace is stretched on bamboo hoops and sewn by hand on foot-powered machines identical to the old Singer machines now seen only as antiques in the rest of the world.
The thread is carefully built up layer upon layer as the hoop moves back and forth. The empty areas of the lace are delicately cut away with sharp little scissors while the loose edges are caught and bound up by the whirring needle. A single item may take five or more days to complete and the end result is a work of art.
Kerawang is an art that has been handed down from generation to generation from the 17th century until today. The pattern, design or motif to be embroidered must first be made in a block graph on paper. After that, cut the desired fabric to be used for the base material. Once the fabric is prepared, we remove some layers of thread from the fabric with precision. Once there is enough available space on the cloth, it is ready to be embroidered and the spaces filled with motifs.
This artisanal fabric dyeing process is more commonly known in the West as tie-dye. The fabric is tied by hand, using a string, to create waterproof zones before immersion a dye bath, which reveals patterns once the fabric is flattened. Another method is resist dyeing, which consists of applying mud, wax or starch by hand, using a stencil or a block print (a sculpted wooden stamp,) on the fabric before immersion. Among the plant-based dyes we use are madder root, which gives us a vibrant range of reds, and pure indigo for blues. The fibers we use are also mostly natural, like cotton, silk, wool, and alpaca.
Our cotton pieces are crafted in Balinese workshops, where spinning and weaving is still done by hand on ancient wood spindles and machines, resulting in the finest and lightest of cloths.
